How capturing a Pal actually works
Every capture attempt calculates a success probability based on three things: the Pal's level and remaining health, the type of sphere used, and its status (healthy, or weakened by fire, poison, or paralysis). The lower the Pal's health and the more it's affected by a status effect, the higher your odds, regardless of its rarity.
That's why throwing a basic sphere at a Pal on full health, even a good-quality sphere, is usually a waste: capture is never guaranteed while the target is at full strength.
Which sphere to use based on rarity
The base Pal Sphere is enough for the vast majority of common wild Pals. As you progress through the tech tree, more effective spheres unlock:
- Mega Sphere: the first real step up from the basic sphere, for mid-level Pals.
- Giga Sphere and Hyper Sphere: needed against rare Pals and high-level zones.
- Ultra Sphere: the tier below top-end, for elite Pals near the end of normal progression.

Weaken the Pal before you throw the sphere
The most reliable strategy, regardless of the Pal's rarity, stays the same:
- Bring its health down without killing it, ideally with a weapon or a combat Pal whose damage you can control precisely.
- Inflict a status effect if you can (burn, poison, paralysis, freeze): every active status boosts the capture rate.
- Throw the sphere suited to its level once its health is low, rather than hoping for a lucky roll at full health.
Avoid weapons or abilities with very high single-hit damage: a Pal killed before capture is a lost opportunity, sometimes an unrecoverable one if it doesn't respawn in the same spot for a while.
Legendary Pals and bosses
Beyond classic rare Pals, Palworld features legendary Pals like Jetragon, Frostallion, Necromus, Paladius, Shadowbeak, and Astegon. These creatures live in specific, out-of-the-way zones on the map (volcanic, desert, snowy mountain, or deep cave areas depending on the Pal), have very high health, and almost always require a Legendary Sphere for any real chance of capture.
These fights are rarely a solo job: bring a well-built team of combat Pals, a solid stock of high-tier spheres, and teammates if you can. Mistakes to avoid
- Underestimating the level gap: a rare Pal can wipe an underprepared team before you even reach the capture phase.
- Bringing only a handful of spheres: always pack extra, including a margin for failed attempts.
- Ignoring status effects: throwing a sphere at a healthy Pal instead of waiting for it to be weakened or poisoned wastes scarce resources.
- Soloing a legendary boss without a base or a combat team strong enough for it.
